PaperPilot Overview
PaperPilot provides a PDF and document toolkit written entirely in Rust. It executes locally on the user’s machine, guaranteeing that files never leave the device. This design removes the dependency on cloud services, Chromium, or C++ runtimes.
Quick Start
Download the package named paperpilot mcp from the releases page and add its configuration to claude_desktop_config.json. After restarting Claude, you can issue commands such as “Merge these two PDFs and compress the result.” The interface runs in the browser without uploading any files.
Core Capabilities
- Organize: merge, split, rotate, delete pages, reorder pages, extract pages, booklet imposition, N up grid
- Optimize: compress
- Extract: plain text, OCR (using pure Rust PaddleOCR via rten)
- Security: watermark, validate signatures, remove signatures, PII scan, deep sanitize
- Office data: Excel to JSON, Excel to CSV
All operations execute locally, providing a seamless experience for AI agents and end users alike.
Performance Insights
Benchmark results are available by running cargo bench –workspace. Detailed methodology and outcome reports are documented in SYSTEM_BENCHMARK_REPORT.md.
Community and Enterprise
The project is released under the Apache 2.0 license and includes a command line interface, MCP server, REST gateway, WASM engine, and a desktop application. Contributions such as bug reports with sample PDFs, new tool requests, and documentation fixes are welcome. An Enterprise Edition with SSO, RBAC, audit logs, and DLP is developed separately.
Documentation and Contribution
Live Swagger documentation runs at http://localhost:7823/docs. Issues and pull requests are encouraged. For newcomers, simple tasks like providing a sample PDF or improving documentation serve as a good entry point.
